What Is a Solar Eclipse?
A solar eclipse is a mysterious celestial event that unfolds in the sky, offering a glimpse into the extraordinary design of the universe. It occurs when the Moon comes between the Earth and the Sun, casting its shadow on Earth. During this alignment, the Sun’s light is partially or completely obscured for a short period of time. This astronomical condition is known as a solar eclipse.
Types of Solar Eclipses
There are different types of solar eclipses based on how much of the Sun is covered by the Moon.
When the Moon completely covers the Sun, it is called a Total Solar Eclipse. If the Sun is only partially covered, it is known as a Partial Solar Eclipse. When the Moon appears smaller in front of the Sun, leaving a bright ring of fire-like light visible around it, the phenomenon is called an Annular Solar Eclipse.

A solar eclipse is entirely a scientific and natural process. It is the result of the precise alignment of the Sun, Moon, and Earth. This event highlights the structured and predictable nature of the universe.
Mythological Connection in Indian Tradition
In Indian mythology, the solar eclipse is linked to the story of Samudra Manthan (the churning of the ocean). According to the legend, when gods and demons were churning the ocean, nectar emerged. A demon named Rahu disguised himself as a god and consumed the nectar. Lord Vishnu then used the Sudarshan Chakra to sever Rahu’s head. Since Rahu had already consumed the nectar, his head became immortal.
It is believed that Rahu attempts to swallow the Sun and the Moon from time to time, which is seen as an eclipse. In ancient Indian astrology, Rahu and Ketu are considered shadow planets and are regarded as the causes of eclipses.
Traditional Beliefs and Scientific Advice
According to traditional beliefs, people are advised not to eat during an eclipse. Chanting mantras and meditating are encouraged, and purification through bathing is recommended after the eclipse.
From a scientific perspective, it is strongly advised not to look at the Sun with the naked eye during an eclipse. Only certified solar filters should be used, as the Sun’s rays can harm the eyes even when it appears partially hidden.
